8. Cartography
Once all the calculations were carried out in GIS, we exported all the maps as Encapsulated Post Script (.eps) files to be imported into the graphics program CorelDrawX3. Many hours were spent creating a visually appealing template that included the background of Vancouver around coal harbor, Stanley Park and the waterfront. This allowed us to make clear and concise maps that illustrate a larger scale analysis on certain neighbourhoods through the case studies. Three bridges were also included in the final maps, with drop shadows to assist in clarity.
A large amount of cartographic work went in to manually creating all the histograms for each map. This required us to calculate the values within each class using select by attributes, and then creating the appropriate bar graphs with labels in CorelDraw. This process proved to be a very tedious and time consuming procedure, but we felt that the quality and effectiveness of the histogram results helps the map user understand the distribution of the classes more easily. It is now possible to determine the exact number of blocks that fall within a particular class of interest.
